Dim Sum Faded Signs

Seriously, what’s up with the menu boards at Chinese restaurants? I don’t mean the big Panda Express-type chains, I’m talking about the little joints in strip-plazas where actual off-the-boat Asians work. They’re always called First China or Dragon Star or the Ho King, or some combination of the same dozen or so words. You know the ones. Someone tell me why it is that in, like, 99% of these establishments the picture menus look like they’ve been sun-bleached. Why do they always look so faded out? Is it cheaper at the sign store if you tell them to go easy on the color saturation? Call me crazy, but I think the grub would look a little more appetizing if the images of said grub didn’t look like halfway-developed Polaroid pictures.
