Zietgiest 2011 — Google’s take on how the world searched:

I never did get around to making a Favorite Films/Everything of 2011 list like I did for 2010, but I thought I’d share some of my favorite viral content from the previous year.

2011 was a crazy one. The tenth anniversary of 9/11 saw the death of its orchestrator, Osama bin Laden, as well as Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi, one of tens of thousands of casualties in the revolutionary wave known as Arab Spring. The “Year of the protestor” also gave us jaw-dropping images from nature-ravaged places like Joplin, Missouri and Tuscaloosa, Alabama, towns leveled by devastating tornadoes, and Tohoku, Japan, a region demolished by a massive earthquake and subsequent tsunami.

In the U.S., we were inundated with news of some talentless twat’s wedding (and 72 days later, her divorce), treated to an absurd number of Republican debates, and endured annoying hacks like Rebecca Black singing about Friday and Rick Perry preaching Strong homophobic rhetoric. I could keep droning on about 2011, but let me get to it. No FAIL compilations or videos of puppies falling asleep in their own feces here, just a sampling of stuff that struck me, and stuck with me, from the year that was…

This is seriously the most adorable non-kitten-related thing you’ll ever see (while not necessary, it helps if you know the original Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeroes song). Cuteness overload in 3, 2, 1 —

My favorite movie trailer of the year, “Green with Envy” starts out like a schmaltzy romantic comedy, but turns out to be a teaser for something so much better! A handful of previews spoofing everything from GREEN LANTERN to THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO followed, but the reveal in this initial spot was too good.

One of several now-iconic visuals from the ongoing Occupy Movement, a University of California Davis police officer pepper-sprays students during their sit-in at an “Occupy UCD” demonstration in northern California. (photo by Jasna Hodzic)

Zach Wahls, a 19-year-old University of Iowa student and son of a same-sex couple, speaking on the strengths of his family during a public forum on House Joint Resolution 6 in the Iowa House of Representatives. Dude nails it. I just wish he would’ve closed with, “Boom. Your argument is invalid.”

An inspiring capture of Christians protecting Muslims during their prayers in Tahrir Square in Cario, Egypt amid violence between pro- and anti-Mubarak factions who were wielding sticks and throwing rocks. (photo by Nevine Zaki)

“Hawkeye” lies next to the casket of his owner, Navy SEAL Jon Tumilson, one of 30 American soldiers killed in Afghanistan on August 6 when their helicopter was shot down during a rescue mission. This image gets me every time.

In Vancouver, British Columbia, hockey fans rioted after the Canucks lost the Stanley Cup to the Boston Bruins. During the fray, Scott Jones kisses his girlfriend Alex Thomas after she was knocked to the ground by a police officer’s riot shield. (photo by Rich Lam)

From Australia comes “How to handle a bully 101.” Lesson 1: drop the little shit on his head, Street Fighter-style; hence the bullied boy’s moniker, Zangief Kid.

5 Second Films is exactly what it sounds like. They put out a new one every weekday and often feature cameos from the likes of Patton Oswalt and Juliette Lewis. Here’s a “best of” compilation of their funnier ones from 2011.

In THE TRIP, a film edited from the BBC series of the same name, Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon take a commissioned tour of northern England restaurants. The two argue incessantly for the better part of the dry road comedy, but nothing digresses into as much hilarity as their over-cockneyed Michael Caine impression-off.

Liam Neeson can take on Nazis, Sith, Batman, even wolves, but who knew he could destroy at improv comedy (and list-making) as well? He guest starred on Ricky Gervais’ HBO series “Life’s Too Short” and left me in stiches.

’til next time, kids.

Very nice. You are right, very crazy year that’s for sure. The Liam Neeson video is classic!

  2. love the Liam Neeson video. hilarious

  3. fyi the font above this comment box that says “leave a reply” is so light that I could hardly see it. You might want to make it a darker color. i’m not sure if you used a pre-generated theme or created one yourself. it looks awesome though. I like the rss thing at the top.
